New Bike - Surly Long Haul Trucker

So... I have had my new bike for a couple of weeks now and it seems about time to make a post added to the internet another review singing the Praises of the Surly Long Haul Trucker!

I collected from Mosquito Bikes near Angel Tube and cycled through London to the college, it felt good straight away. I have used it to cycle through London from Victoria to the college every day I was teaching and then last week some longer rides commuting to college. I was staying last week at family in Surrey and so I cycled to London via the Thames towpath and Richmond park, some nice relaxed cycling before central London.

Back to the bike though, with all the cycling last week etc it's been really good to get fully acquainted with the new bike, and well its great!

My bike before the LHT was a Kona Dew Deluxe with 700c wheels which had served me well as a commuter bike for many years, I had been adapting it to make it better for longer trips, but still keeping my eye on the LHT as the bike i'd love. The trouble is I could never transform my Kona into a LHT. We went on a long surrey to Shoreham tow path ride and when we were riding we tried each others bikes, Pete with a full suspension, it was like riding on air. Doug had another Kona but one with 26in wheels and i really noticed the difference and that was a point recently i thought ok rather than keep trying to turn my Dew into a tourer get a proper tourer!

The LHT is super comfy for riding distances, the height of the bars is perfect, nicely upright and relaxed, the chunky 26in tires are great to use after using 700c for ages, running them on a lower pressure through tow paths and gravel etc I am not feeling so achy after rides as I did with the Dew!

3 water bottle cages is great for super thirsty long summer rides, I have got used to changing gears using the bar end shifters, and the brake positions and well generally riding with drop bars.  The gears are great, they are not going to help me go super fast on a flat, but they are so great going up hill as there are some really low gears, I am thinking next year on the London to Brighton I think I may make it all the way up the Beacon!

Its a great bike!
